J & J Carter were appointed to design and install a ceiling feature to the atrium of the three storey office block in Newbury.

The interior fabric sails needed to be installed 11 metres in the air and the design needed to enhance the foyer of the building without restricting the light entering via the atrium.

A simple triangular steel frame was used as the hub of the design in order to suspend the sails in the 250 square metre atrium.

The fabric is a woven glass fibre with a PVC coating, which conforms to BS 476 for fire retardancy. Due to a complex roof truss arrangement, an accurate 3D survey and model was done to ensure total alignment of the sails with proposed fixings in the roof. A total of 86.5 square metres of fabric sails were installed in a basket weave arrangement.
