J & J Carter was founded in 1988 and now with over 30 years’ experience in the business, we have built extensive knowledge and a reputable name in the industry.

We owe huge thanks to our dedicated customers and staff for joining us on our journey, whom through them we have built the success of J & J Carter.

 

1988

Founded by John Carter.

1992

Introduction of Computer-Aided Design, CNC Cutting and Introduction of automated Keder manufacture.

1994

Charlie Carter joins the family business in Production.

1996

Atlanta Olympics – 1728m2 of Pavilions provided within 4 weeks from order for the rowing at Savannah.

1998

10 years of J & J Carter.

2000

Standing at 43 metres high, the “Sails of the South” in Portsmouth is manufactured, the most complex tensioned membrane structure in the country to date.

2001

The PTFE membrane structure at West Quay, Southampton wins the Institute of Civil Engineers Award for Small Projects. Existing CNC Plotter is upgraded to 13.5m x 3m

2002

Following the atrocities of 9-11, J & J Carter supply “Stop & Search” Canopies to U.S Airforce

2003

J & J Carter acquire a steel fabrication business which brings the operation in-house, increasing productivity and quality of the service.

2005

Keder increases in popularity. J & J Carter receive an order of 120,000m of Keder from a client in Australia, the largest order ever requested.

2006

J & J Carter build the Blackbrook (Taunton) Indoor Tennis Centre. Opened by LTA Chief Executive Roger Draper.

2007

Kilworth House Theatre Project by J & J Carter is the Award Winner of Campaign to Protect Rural England, Leicestershire Property and Construction Awards and Best Structural Design at East Midlands LABC Built in Quality Awards.

2008

J & J Carter delivers its first cable net structure. The Liverpool Web of Light consumes over 400m of stainless steel cable. Designed by Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei and engineered by Arup.

2009

J & J Carter’s EcoDam is Patented for its unique design. EcoDam is used by the Environment Agency and others in the fight against flooding.

2010

J & J Carter provides over 30Km of Oil Spill Boom to the BP Gulf of Mexico disaster, where 42 gallons per day were lost, creating spills some 160 x 32 Km.

2012

J & J Carter supply Temporary Stables for the London Olympics with L.H Woodhouse.

2013

Winner of the Innovation Excellence Award for the North Hampshire Inspire Business Awards for the project “Eco-Dam”

2014

Finalist of Innovation and Technology Award at the Test Valley Business Awards for “Eco-Dam” project.

2015

Development and delivery of J & J Carter’s first multi-storey structure KUBE.

2015

J & J Carter supplies to Rugby World Cup and an EcoDam to the Environment Agency to assist with the flooding in Yorkshire.

2016

J & J Carter supplies Merchandising Kiosks for Beyoncé's Formation World Tour.

2017

Construction of the first FARM250 3 Stage Anaerobic Digester.

2018

Founder, John Carter, passes away. He served his industry since the 1950's starting out as an apprentice. Worked on various committees for the greater good of today. He was determined and very proud. His legend lives on and is survived by his wife, Jill, sons Robert and Charlie, and grand-daughters Emily and Isabella.

2020

Clear PVC Tensile Roof is built for the Hot House at London Design Festival.

2020

Managing Director, Robert Carter, is admitted to the M.U.T.A Executive Committee.

1989

First factory 360m2, in Lion Court in Basingstoke, with 3 employees and first of many Forsström High-Frequency Welders.

1994

J & J Carter’s work appears on National Television, having fabricated the airbags for the Volvo 440 “Airbag included” campaign.

1995

Robert Carter joins the family business in Sales.

1997

J & J Carter win the IFAI Design Award.

1999

J & J Carter win the IFAI Design Award.

2000

Howden Sewerage Treatment Works Project wins JEC Composites Award for Best reinforced Structure in Europe, and MUTA Project of the Year.

2001

The membrane canopy spanning the Aberavon Bridge in Port Talbot wins the Institute of Civil Engineers Civic Trust Award.

2002

Further investment in automated High-Frequency Keder manufacture, enabling an annual output of 900 Km. The Parade Ring Structure (1250m2) at Sandown Park Racecourse wins the IFAI International Award of Excellence.

2004

John Carter receives The MUTA Presidents Award, presented by Ian Parkin.

2005

Following the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, J & J Carter supplies decontamination tents to the area.

2007

The Lights Theatre Project is Highly Commended by MUTA as Project of the Year.

2007

Introduction of ATEX, a new UK-made Membrane material offering a lifespan of 25 years plus and the ability to be recycled. The first project with this material is delivered at IBM North Harbour.

2008

Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago commission J & J Carter to design and build their 320m2 5th Floor Roof enclosure. A unique double conic insulated structure is delivered, all made in the U.K

2010

Silicone Glass makes its debut with the construction of the Gatwick North Terminal Interchange. ATEX is used to provide some 800m2 of rain screen Facade.

2011

Following many years of enjoyable expansion at Basingstoke, a new site at Andover is acquired. 1.5 acres with 2500m2 of factory and offices become our new home.

2012

IFAI International Achievement Award for “Malls Shopping Centre- Basingstoke, The Malls” project.

2013

& J Carter’s first in-house Expo “CARTORIUM” is welcomed.

2014

J & J are awarded the CE accreditation by the UKAS accredited body Centre for Assessment. This enables the CE Declaration of Performance certificates for all of our products.

2015

In order to reduce the environmental impact, J & J Carter switch to renewable solar energy source and form a partnership with Hive Energy- one of the UK’s leading developers of solar energy.

2016

EcoDam is exported for the first time to France. Clients include RMT Paris Métro.

2016

J & J Carter wins 4000m2 Tensile Roof contract for Sunderland's Beacon of Light Building.

2017

Civil Engineering works commence at the Andover factory which sees the move of the steelworks factory from the Meon Valley. Some 900 lorry loads of chalk is removed to make way for the new steel works.

2019

KUBE makes it's debut at the Showman's Show. Demonstrating the modular, multi-storey capability of a unique temporary structure.

2020

J & J Carter respond to the COVID-19 Corona Virus pandemic by supporting it's clients with the supply of temporary structures for testing stations, outdoor dining and temporary classrooms.

2020

Last of the original founders, Jill Carter, passes away. J & J Carter is now directed by surviving owners Robert and Charlie Carter.
