Why Invest in Biogas?

Biogas is a renewable clean energy source, produced when organic matter is digested by bacteria in the absence of oxygen - a process also known as anaerobic digestion. One of the main advantages of biogas is the wide range of waste material that can be used to create energy, including animal manure, food waste and sewage.

Due to its versatile nature and high yield, biogas is often produced as part of an industrial process to create a source of energy. While it may appear to be an unknown avenue to many, the advantages of investing in biogas can be life changing. J & J Carter have broken down the advantages of biogas and three reasons why we think biogas production is a worthwhile investment.

1. Create a circular economy

By creating clean energy from the fermentation of infinite resources such as manure, food and sewage, a circular economy can be achieved. This is because the waste can be converted into biofertiliser and spread directly onto crops, meanwhile the output of anaerobic digestion can be used as an environmentally friendly energy source.

2. Diversify Income

The clean energy produced during anaerobic digestion can be used to operate your business, which in turn can offset the cost of supplying energy from the electricity network. What's more, any surplus energy can be sold back to the grid or within your local community, generating a secondary revenue stream.

3. Protect the environment

Biogas consists predominantly of methane (CH4), which is over 20 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. As a result, efforts to prevent or use methane emissions can provide significant environmental benefits.

Research has also shown than small-scale anaerobic digestion plays an important role in decarbonising food supply chain, which in turn aids the UK Government's commitment to achieving zero emissions by 2050.

Introducing the FARM250 biogas digester

J & J Carter have partnered with Bioplex to create an innovative biogas digester called the Farm250 system. Designed for smaller, family-sized farms, this biogas digester allows for sustainable farming practises that will reduce both costs and environmental impact, in addition to the following benefits:

  • Grit removal
  • Patented 3 stage high-rate process
  • Advanced process control
  • Solid materials - not dependant on slurry
  • Fermenate and digestate outputs
  • High methane quality
  • Return on investment within 10 years
  • Low maintenance
  • No downtime
