Sterts Theatre

In 1994, a second-hand canopy was purchased to cover the amphitheatre. However, as this canopy was not custom-made for Sterts there had always been issues with wind and rain getting under the sides.

The absolute necessity for a new canopy came in 2008 when a storm split one of the largest panels.

J & J Carter were asked to replace and extend the old weatherbeaten canopy. However, extending the existing structure would increase the loading by more than 10% and we were informed by Building Control that this was not possible. The theatre is old and it was impossible to accurately calculate its structural strength. To overcome this challenge, J & J Carter designed independent structures to serve as the extensions which architecturally looked the same as the newly replaced canopy.

The new canopy dramatically improved weather protection, allowing the theatre to maximise its income potential. The work was completed in just 3 weeks on site.

Visitors can make the most of their visit by enjoying the beautiful surroundings, by having a picnic (you can order a hamper if you so wish) or by eating at the bistro bar. It definitely offers the visitor a unique experience!
